I am currently investigating the social and economic implications of second homes (vacation homes and investment properties) using interview, survey, ethnographic, and textual sources. A preview of the research process, with a focus on short-term rentals and vacation homes, can be seen here. Some elaboration of my questions are discussed in this blog post I wrote about vacation homes and the sharing economy.
I am currently writing a book (Routledge Publishers) for architects and designers who want to incorporate sophisticated social research methods into their work so that their designs can be sustainable, respond to user needs, and improve neighborhoods and communities. The tentative title is A Guide to Socially-Informed Research for Architects and Designers.
