Do you have a second home that you use for vacations, to make money, or somewhere in between? For short or long visits? A fancy or not-so-fancy place? Within or far away from a city? On the same property as your primary residence or somewhere else? With family or rented to strangers? Or anywhere in between all of these things?

Or are you a stakeholder involved with how second homes are being discussed in your community? All of these are part of this research, and I’d love to talk with you!

If you would like to be interviewed or if you have any questions about the research, please contact me via the contact form on this page. You can also send me an email at janninmy@whitman.edu. Or you can call or text me at 541-612-0063. Feel free to forward this information to others who may fit the criteria noted above. I am happy to do a phone interview.

More details if you’re wondering about the interviews: My hope is to talk with people about the meaning they attach to their second homes. I aim to describe the complexity of this issue, and I think talking to homeowners directly about their experiences and views is the best way to go to add to the bigger (often purely economic, and often oversimplified) pictures and stories we see about the issue. The interviews would likely last about an hour. If they’re in person, I’d find a way to meet in a place that is comfortable for any participants, preferably in the second home but not required, and anyone who is interviewed would receive a small cash gift. There’s a short survey that I’d ask people to fill out, too. But, as with all of my research, any questions can be skipped and all will remain confidential. So, I will use no names, addresses, or any information that’d make people’s identities known to anyone who reads about the results.
